(On his state of mind one year since the inauguration)

For the past year, I have put the utmost priority on protecting the lives and livelihoods of the people. Not a single day has passed without me focusing on the countermeasures against the novel coronavirus pandemic. Although the number of infected cases is on the decline nationwide, we must remain vigilant, listen to the voices of people on site, ensure we have reliable medical treatment structures in place and do our utmost to promote vaccination. I am proud to announce that the number of people who have completed the first dose in Japan has surpassed that of the United States. And we will reach the same level as the United States for the second dose. I will do my best to eliminate people's anxiety as soon as possible so that they can return to their previous lifestyles.

I have also taken on various long-standing challenges. I believe that we have successfully paved the way for younger generations toward the future in such areas as green environment, digital technology, fertility treatment and reform on medical costs for the elderly. I also believe that the Government has been able to respond to issues that cannot be postponed, such as the disposal of ALPS (Advanced Liquid Processing System) treated water. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the people for their cooperation in achieving those tasks. My cabinet is committed to making utmost efforts to serve the people until the very last day.
