[Title] Press Conference on the Response to the ROK Presidential Election Results and Others
(On response to the ROK presidential election results)
First of all, I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations and a warm welcome to Mr. Yoon Suk-yeol, President-elect of the Republic of Korea (ROK). Japan and the ROK are important neighboring countries to each other. Especially now, the international community is confronted with epoch-making changes. I believe that sound Japan-ROK relations are indispensable in realizing a rule-based international order and ensuring peace, stability, and prosperity in the region and the world. Furthermore, I believe that trilateral coordination between Japan, the United States, and the ROK is important. As you mentioned in your question, no concrete decision has been made regarding a possible telephone talk at this point, but I would like to emphasize we must develop Japan-ROK relations based on the foundation of our friendly and cooperative relationship that our countries have built up since we normalized our diplomatic ties in 1965. I look forward to the leadership of President-elect Yoon Suk-yeol, and hope to work closely with the new President to further improve Japan-ROK relations.
(On Japan-ROK relations)
Japan-ROK relations are at a very difficult juncture. We cannot simply leave things as they are. Keeping promises made between the two countries is a fundamental principle. Building on Japan's consistent position as such, I believe it is vital that we communicate closely with the new president and his administration in order to restore a sound relationship. With this in mind, I am eager to see the new administration in action and to engage in dialogue with them as we go forward.
