[Title] Press Conference by Prime Minister ISHIBA Shigeru Regarding the Tsunami Caused by the Earthquake near Kamchatka Peninsula
[Opening Statement by Prime Minister Ishiba]
Regarding the earthquake that occurred near the Kamchatka Peninsula, tsunami waves have been observed in various locations, including waves reaching 1.3 meters at Kuji Port in Iwate Prefecture. The possibility of a larger tsunami arriving as a second or third wave cannot be ruled out, so the tsunami warning remains in effect. Residents in areas under evacuation orders are still facing extremely difficult situations. We urge them to pay close attention to tsunami information and continue to remain in a safe place until the warning is lifted.
For those who have evacuated to higher ground, local governments are currently calling for transfers to evacuation centers with better conditions, and we ask for their cooperation in this regard. As the evacuation continues amid the intense heat, I have also instructed the relevant ministries and agencies to implement countermeasures against heatstroke at evacuation centers. We ask those who have evacuated to remain evacuated while prioritizing their health, including through frequent hydration. We understand that they may experience many inconveniences during their evacuation. In case of any difficulties, we urge them not to hesitate to talk to the staff in charge of managing the evacuation centers. We also sincerely ask the staff to provide their continued dedication despite the obvious burden on them.
The Government is fully committed to responding to your voiced concerns. The entire Government is working together to address this situation. Just a short while ago, we held a meeting of director-general level officials from relevant ministries and agencies to strengthen coordination on information gathering, evacuation guidance and evacuation center management. We will continue to take all possible measures to assess the situation and prevent further damage. That's all from me.
