[Title] Press Conference by Prime Minister TAKAICHI Sanae regarding the Japan-ROK Summit Meeting
(On the results of the first Japan-ROK Summit Meeting for Prime Minister Takaichi, and the Prime Minister's impressions of President LEE Jae Myung.)
Earlier today, ahead of the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting, I held my first Japan–Republic of Korea summit with President Lee Jae Myung, who is serving as Chair.
This was my first time meeting President Lee in person. He gave me a very warm welcome, and we had a friendly and productive exchange of views. The meeting was originally scheduled for about twenty minutes, but it ended up lasting forty-five, as our discussion covered a wide range of topics.
In terms of substance, the President and I agreed on the importance of strengthening cooperation between Japan and the Republic of Korea, as well as among Japan, the Republic of Korea, and the United States, given the current strategic environment. I believe this was a very meaningful and constructive discussion.
We also acknowledged that, as neighboring countries, there are naturally issues on which our positions differ. Even so, we agreed that both sides should take the lead in managing these matters, and continue to develop Japan-ROK relations in a future-oriented and stable manner based on the foundation of the bilateral relations which has been established since the normalization of diplomatic ties.
We also agreed to actively promote what we call "shuttle diplomacy." I look forward to welcoming President Lee to Japan for the next meeting. Through this process, our two governments will continue close and regular communication. Overall, I felt it was a very warm and meaningful meeting.
(Based on the Prime Minister's remarks that the leaders confirmed the importance of the trilateral relationship between Japan, the U.S. and ROK, whether the leaders also discussed how the two countries will together address China.)
I'm afraid I cannot go into detail about discussions concerning third countries. However, we did exchange views regarding the surrounding regional situation. Thank you very much.
