[Title] Statement of Koichiro Gemba, the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan (High level meeting on the rule of law, Side Event "The fight against corruption and its impact on sustainable economic growth")
President Fischer, President Ilves, Foreign Minister Abdessalem, distinguished panelists, Ladies and Gentlemen,
It is a great honor for me to participate in this side-event of the first High Level Meeting on the Rule of Law and to make some concluding remarks.
First of all, I wish to express my deep appreciation to the initiative of the Austrian Government in organizing this important event. It is a great pleasure for Japan to be a co-host together with the Governments of Austria, Estonia and Tunisia.
Today, we have gathered here to discuss a serious issue that poses a threat to the stability and security of each society. Corruption threatens the very foundation of democracy and undermines the ethical values that lie at the basis of our society.
Corruption also impedes sustainable economic growth and investment by disrupting fair competition. The significance of this event to facilitate candid discussion between the public and the private sectors cannot be underestimated.
Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,
The international endeavor to fight against corruption is at its critical stage. Japan is committed to this effort and is determined to contribute to enhancing global coordination and united actions on this important issue. Japan will continue to fully support the activities by UNAFEI and UNODC.
Thank you all for your attention and participation
