I am pleased to be visiting Nigeria as part of my first visit to sub-Saharan Africa since assuming the position of Minister for Foreign Affairs last September.

I would like to thank Foreign Minister Tuggar and all of you for your warm welcome. Since I arrived in Abuja, I have experienced the dynamism of Nigeria with full potential growth.

In the bilateral meeting, I had a candid discussion with Minister Tuggar on strengthening of Japan-Nigeria economic relations, support for the political and economic stability of coastal countries of the Gulf of Guinea, and enhancement of cooperation on African and global issues.

At the outset, I welcomed that economic relations between the two countries are being dynamically strengthened, toward an achievement of a virtuous circle in which both economies can grow together, including the recent expansion of investment for start-ups and from venture capitals, and arrangements on new development cooperation in the areas of food security and health.

Further, we shared a view to deepen our cooperation to link Japanese financial resources and technology with Nigeria's vitality and to create a virtuous circle in which both countries' businesses and economies can grow together.

With regard to supporting the political and economic stability of Nigeria and other coastal countries of the Gulf of Guinea, I explained that Japan attaches great importance to the stability of North-East Nigeria and has been providing assistance to communities and displaced persons.

Also, I shared the recognition with Minister Tuggar that both countries are concerned about the prolonged instability in the Sahel region, and that it is important to contribute to peace and stability of the Sahel region and coastal countries of the Gulf of Guinea and to promote their sustainable growth.

On strengthening of cooperation on African and global issues, we shared a view on enhancement of cooperation in international arena including disarmament, WPS and strengthening of the functions of the UN including the Security Council reform.

Especially, regarding the WPS, we also shared a view to further strengthen cooperation in the field of the WPS with Nigeria, where many women are active, through Japanese efforts which incorporate perspective of the WPS.

In lead up to the TICAD Ministerial meeting in August this year and TICAD 9 in August next year, Japan will further enhance our partnership with Nigeria, an important partner in co-creating and developing solutions to African and global challenges.
