[Title] Speech by Minister at the Welcome Reception of Nikkei and Japanese Abroad

Good evening, everyone. My name is IWAYA Takeshi, and I was appointed Minister for Foreign Affairs on the 1st of this month. On behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all of you Nikkei and Japanese abroad from around the world on your visit to Japan.

I understand that the Convention of Nikkei and Japanese Abroad is held in a hybrid format, with both in-person and online gatherings, as was the case last year. In recent years, it has become increasingly convenient to communicate with people in faraway places. On the other hand, the importance of face-to-face communication has not diminished at all. I am honored that over 170 overseas Nikkei and Japanese abroad have come all the way to Tokyo to participate in our reception today.

Nikkei overcame numerous hardships with their indomitable spirit and earned the trust of the countries to which they had emigrated. Today, Nikkei and Japanese Nikkei communities are all very active in their respective fields, not only in the countries in which they now reside but also all over the world, including in Japan. In July 2024, the Government of Brazil apologized for the persecution of Japanese immigrants in that country, which has the largest Nikkei community in the world. I am proud of the efforts of the Nikkei and Japanese abroad, who have contributed greatly to the development of Brazil and as a result have come to gain an honored position there.

I understand that the theme of the 64th Convention of Nikkei and Japanese Abroad is “Let’s overcome the age of division and conflict! Nikkei Community Contributing to the Realization of Harmonious Coexistence”. This theme is in line with my view of the mission of Japanese diplomacy, which is to move the world away from division and conflict towards reconciliation and cooperation. As we step up our diplomatic efforts, I am determined to learn humbly from the achievements of the Nikkei in forging ties that connect Japan with their respective countries, and to work together towards the realization of our common goals.

Although we have only a limited amount of time today, I look forward to hearing your candid opinions. In closing, may I wish you all continued success in your respective fields. Thank you so much for your kind attention.
