[Title] Speech by Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, at the Welcome Reception for the Participants of the 65th Convention of Nikkei and Japanese Abroad
Good evening, everyone. My name is IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs. On the occasion of the 65th Convention of Nikkei and Japanese Abroad, I am honored to share a few words of greeting. First, let me extend a heartfelt welcome to all of you, Nikkei and Japanese abroad, visiting Japan from across the globe.
I would also like to convey my deep appreciation to the distinguished guests present with us today, as well as to everyone who worked tirelessly to make this gathering possible, including the Association of Nikkei.
The very first reception I had the pleasure of hosting after assuming office last October was this Welcome Reception for Nikkei.
Soon afterward, my first official overseas mission as Foreign Minister took me to the APEC Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Peru, where I had the opportunity to engage with Nikkei and tour the Japanese Immigration Museum.
More recently, this March, I was fortunate to hold discussions with leaders of the Japanese American Nikkei community here in Tokyo.
Through these encounters, I was impressed to witness how Nikkei have overcome numerous hardships and thrived across continents and generations.
It has been 67 years since the inaugural Convention of Nikkei and Japanese Abroad was held in 1957. In that time, the environment surrounding Nikkei communities has evolved considerably, and the issues they face have become more varied.
Today, we have the pleasure of welcoming Nikkei from many different life paths and circumstances. Among you are those who have, over decades, earned trust and respect through perseverance, as well as newer members who have moved abroad through work or marriage and are already enriching their local societies.
I believe this convention offers a valuable opportunity to reflect on the current concerns of Nikkei groups, to explore avenues of cooperation with Japan, and to foster "new connections" that will support their future growth.
The Government of Japan is committed to cherishing these ties and working ever more closely with Nikkei as we advance together.
In closing, I wish each of you continued good health and success in your endeavors, as you serve as vital bridges between Japan and the countries you call home.
