I am pleased to announce that Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress will pay a State Visit to the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam for the first time, and subsequently pay a visit to the Kingdom of Thailand.

Japan has long enjoyed close and cordial relations with Viet Nam. Viet Nam has long extended its invitation for Their Majesties to visit, and President Quang kindly renewed its invitation after his appointment as the new President in April last year.

In Thailand, His Majesty the King Bhumibol Adulyadej passed away last October, who was loved and respected by Thai people during His Majesty's reign of 70 years. Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress will pay a condolence visit to the Kingdom of Thailand to show respect for His Majesty the King's tremendous leadership for the development of friendship and goodwill between Japan and Thailand.

I am convinced that the visit will further strengthen the intimate relations of friendship and goodwill with Viet Nam and Thailand, and I feel immense pleasure together with the people of Japan.

I would like to express my wholehearted wish for Their Majesties' pleasant journey and safe return home.
