[Full text]

Dear President Rajoy,

I am greatly shocked and feel strong resentment to hear that terrorism in Barcelona and Cambrils caused numerous fatalities and injuries. I resolutely condemn this despicable terrorism.

On behalf of the Japanese government and people, I would like to offer my heartfelt condolences to all the victims and their families, as well as my sympathies to the wounded.

The pain that has been inflicted upon Spain is also our pain. I would like to express our heartfelt solidarity at this difficult time.

No act of terrorism, whatever its form, can negate the fundamental values that we share. In close cooperation with Spain and the international community, Japan will firmly strive to combat terrorism.

Sincerely yours,

Shinzo Abe

Prime Minister of Japan
