[Title] New Year's Reflection by the Prime Minister
I wish a very happy new year to you all.
Amidst the ongoing spread of novel coronavirus infections and the still severe economic situation, the Government of Japan will, first and foremost, make all-out efforts to prevent the further spread of infections.
Even over the New Year's holidays, health professionals are making all-out efforts to battle the virus around the clock at medical facilities, public health centers, and nursing care facilities. I express my sincere appreciation once again to all those concerned.
The Suga Cabinet has made a firm vow to protect the lives and livelihoods of the citizens and we will continue to do everything in our power to prevent the spread of infections and move towards economic recovery. We will, together with you, overcome this unprecedented national crisis and create a new society for the post-coronavirus era.
"Green" and "digital" will be the sources of new growth for our country. By taking the lead to support bold investments that spur innovation, concentrating all policy resources, and resolutely carrying out all necessary reforms, we will dramatically change our economy and society and lead the next era.
The coronavirus situation has increased people's interest in areas outside major cities. Capitalizing on this momentum, we will advance digital transformation and create a flow of people to those areas. Through agricultural reforms, tourism policies, and other initiatives, we will bring vitality to local economies, which account for a significant portion of Japan's consumption, and reinvigorate Japan as a whole.
Even as uncertainty in international affairs is growing, Japan's resolute diplomatic policy is unwavering. Taking the Japan-U.S. alliance as the cornerstone, we will strategically advance efforts to bring about a free and open Indo-Pacific and build stable relations with neighboring countries.
The coronavirus crisis has reminded us of the need for global solidarity. Japan will aim to realize a "united world" and lead the creation of the post-coronavirus order, placing importance on multilateralism.
On top of that, this summer we will hold the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, which symbolize the unity of the world. We will advance our preparations thoroughly so as to achieve Games that are safe and secure.
This year, too, keeping a close eye on what is the common sense held by you the citizens, we will make all-out efforts as "the Cabinet that works for the people." I ask for your understanding and cooperation.
