I am deeply grieved and saddened at the news that many precious lives were lost and many people were affected as a result of the recent earthquake that struck the southern part of Guayas province, the Republic of Ecuador.

On behalf of the Government of Japan and the Japanese people, I express my heartfelt condolences to all those who lost their lives and their bereaved families. I extend my sympathies to all who have been affected by this disaster and pray for the swift reconstruction of the affected areas.
