Dr. KITAGAWA Susumu, Distinguished Professor at Kyoto University, has been awarded this year's Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

I congratulate Professor Kitagawa most wholeheartedly on this remarkable honor.

This award reflects the international community's high acclaim for his achievements related to the development of metal–organic frameworks.

I express my great respect for Professor Kitagawa's achievements, and I take great pride in the fact that this discovery of truth, achieved through the creative ideas of a Japanese researcher, has greatly contributed to the continued progress of humankind and has been recognized by the international community.

This distinction follows the awarding of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine the day before yesterday, and it is tremendously encouraging to the Japanese people that the excellence of Japan's research capabilities has been recognized by the international community. The Government of Japan will continue to firmly support creative and diverse research while strongly promoting the training and fostering of researchers.

ISHIBA Shigeru
